The South East New Territories Landfill (SENT Landfill)

As one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Hong Kong generates millions of tonnes of municipal and construction waste each year. To complement the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s waste management policy, Veolia offers state-of- the-art landfill design and operation expertise, as well as circular economy strategies to turn landfills into a new energy source.

The Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department estimates that the municipal waste in Asia’s World City will overflow by 2020 if current trends continue.

Hong Kong’s waste problem needs to be addressed with comprehensive solutions aimed at boosting efficiency and environmental performance. Opportunities include optimising landfill operation and discovering ways to generate new resources from waste.

The Veolia Solution

Veolia operates the South East New Territories Landfill (SENT Landfill), a strategic landfill and key solid waste disposal site in Hong Kong. Veolia introduced innovative solutions to enhance efficiency at the site and established a landfill gas treatment facility onsite to generate energy from waste.

To maximise efficiency and align the facility with the highest environmental standards, Veolia implemented solutions including landfill liner, leachate management, landfill gas management, surface and ground water, and environmental monitoring systems. Veolia also built a landfill gas facility onsite to convert landfill gas into energy, diversifying energy sources for Hong Kong.

Veolia’s circular economy approach enables landfill gas derived from waste to be exported for processing and injection into the energy grid.
